The Portepee (frz.) is a silvered or gilded Quaste at the sword, sword or Dolch for the marking of an officer or an NCO with special rights (according to today with the German Federal Armed Forces starting from rank sergeant upward).

Even if the Portepee is not usual as article with the tradition-poor German Federal Armed Forces, in the German Federal Armed Forces the sergeant ranks are called NCOs with Portepee. There is the Portepee, and/or which still remained which of it, a Paspelierung from a old-golden cord at the uniform collar. In the navy the term is "“PU"” or "“PO"” for the boat people (pl. to Bootsmann) today still common.

History

The term comes of French haven or havens , which transfer as much as sword carriers (and/or become outdated: Degengehenk) means. That is a belt from leather or material (cloth, cord), which was usually wound around grasp and handle of a sword and in a Quaste ended. It was original a bayonet knot with that the sword or sword to the wrist was fastened, in order not to lose it in the battle. Later they marked the troop formation and in the complexness the processing the officer before introduction of the rank insignias in half 18. Jhd. Since 1789 also sergeants of the Prussian army led the Portepee. Always ornaments took place, in order to express the affiliation to certain troops and ranks. Furthermore civil servants of the elevated service also university-formed were allowed to carry the Portepee.
