With power supply the infrastructure of the energy production is addressed. The power supply is a Unterkategorie of the key word energy. The power supply is e.g. concerned with the supply of necessary resources for the energy production as well as the derivative and distribution of the produced and/or converted energy, that electric current.

Definition

Power supply the supply is named by energy in different forms (sources of energy), well usable for humans. The forms of energy most frequently used by humans are heat energy and electricity. The human needs are directed particularly toward the ranges heating, food preparation and the enterprise from mechanisms and machines to the life easement. Here the topic progressive movement and consumption e.g. fossil source of energy is not insignificant in vehicles.

The different sources of energy can reach the consumers over lines, like typically electricity, natural gas, long-distance heating and local heat supply, or they are to a large extent storably and arbitrarily transportable, like e.g. hard coal and brown coals, fuel oils, fuels (gasolines, Diesel fuels), industrial gases, nuclear fuels (uranium), biomasses (wood among other things), BtL fuel (liquid fuel from biomass).

The energy consumption per head is world-wide very different and in the industrialized countries around a multiple higher than e.g. in the third world.

From physical view it is to be noticed that energy does not produce or uses due to the principle of conservation of energy in principle, but to be only converted can. Energy " consumption " does not mean thus actually the transformation of energy into one any longer usable (or not far used) form, usually ambient heat.

History

In industrially highly developed countries 19 has themselves since that. Century enterprise with the production and supply of energy for general consumption employs. Here the central production of electricity as well as the transmission are the center of attention to the individual consumers. Further are the procurement, the transport and the conversion from fuel material to heating purposes an important industry.

Approx. 40 per cent of the world-wide power requirement is covered by electricity. Front runners in the consumption of this portion are with approx. 20 per cent electric drives. Afterwards is the lighting with 19 per cent, which takes part air condition technology with 16 per cent and the information technology with 14 per cent in the world-wide electrical power requirement.

Our power supply grew historically. On the modern requirements such as climatic protection, environmental protection, lastingness and Vesorgungssicherheit the old technologies are hardly adaptable. There is a cross-party consent that the renewable energy the future belongs. Perhaps we must use also our infrastructure differently than so far. A radical solution would e.g. be a hydrogen economy. An increase of the energy costs is not connected with it.

Power supplier

In Germany the well-known power supply firms are predominantly local public utilities as well as regional subsidiary companies of the large rule zone operators.
