The word Premium ("„first "“) is often part of a product designation, which is to suggest a high quality of the product to the consumer and justify a higher price (see branded articles). Sometimes the term with further probably-sounding attributes becomes like "„Premium verum "“("„true first "“) or "„Premium regionalis "“("„regional first "“) provide. Since the term mark and marking-legally is not protected and thus at will can be used, it does not offer with the purchase a decision making aid to the consumer.

The term serves also for the differentiation of product segments, e.g. the hochpreisigen Premiumbiere for the mittelpreisigen consumer beers or the niedrigpreisigen cheap beers.
