Press releases (PMs), also press statements or press sending (PAs) mentioned, inform journalists about statements, Dementi, events, products and meetings. They are passed on by institutions, enterprises or personalities of the public life or public interest, frequently also by PR-agencies, to the press.

They are thereby the probably usually used instrument of the public work and the crucial link between information suppliers and Informationsverwertern. Succeeds with a publication directing the attention of an editorship on itself then this often causes a desired editorial contribution in a newspaper, on the television or in sound broadcasting. Press texts for journalists are first of all only suggestions, in order to take care of a topic editorialally. That is, the more professionally a press release written is the larger, is also the chance on a journalistic utilization.

An editor receives every now and then dozens of press releases daily and stands thus before the task to sight and select from the flood of information these as fast as possible. Therefore press releases try to be noticeable. On the other hand however reports, which do not consider certain stylistic guidelines, work often dubiously and a little convincingly. For this reason press releases, which do not correspond to the "“standard"” or a certain standard, move fast into the waste-paper basket. The feat consists thus of formulating both stylistic surely and after usual Formalia arousing and the interest of the journalists. It proved as useful to consider when writing a PM the so-called 6 W:

  • Who
  • Where
  • When
  • Which
  • How
  • Why

If a press release is handed over on paper, should be written with typewriter and/or in a not proportional writing with double line space. This results from editorial history, the gaps for hand corrections is used. By the use of a typewriter writing the overall length of a text for the typesetter becomes better appreciable.

For the spreading are suitable so-called press portals, which pass press releases on over their press distributors to the media.
