Primary research (field research) as a method of the market study is used, in order to raise new market data not seized so far yet. It stands thus contrary to the secondary research (desk research) and mainly by large-scale enterprises and market research institutes is accomplished.

Methods

In principle three methods are used:

  • Questioning (e.g. By telephone, personal, written,"…)
  • Observation (e.g. Field observation, laboratory observation)
  • Experiment (e.g. Laboratory test, market test, goods test, Studiotest,"…)

As special forms are considered to the primary research:

  • Multi-topic investigations (also "“bus investigation"” mentioned)
  • Multiclientstudie
  • Panel collection

Advantages

  • Collection information not existing yet
  • Design of the collection particularly for own question
  • Recognition of Markttendenzen before the competition
  • Guideline assistance for new innovative products

Disadvantages

  • Costing and time-intensively
  • Provision of information time-consuming
  • special know-how necessarily
