The term principal office has two meanings:
- Principal office as a department and/or a specialist area within an administration, usually responsibly for questions of the sequence organisation and the internal administration as well as for central of services like e.g. Procurement. Like that e.g. the EDP department, the post office and the caretaker service is often the principal office attached. Since the field of the principal offices is not legally fixed, the tasks are not as finally to be described as this for example at the or the register offices the case is. Example: Principal office of the city X. its boss calls itself therefore directors/conductors of the principal office of the city X and/or principal office leader of the city X. furthermore can the principal office also only a SGL; a subject leader manage.
As usual in the administration, also the principal office carries a numeric designation. Under normal conditions the number 10.
- Principal office as contrast to the additional job (mostly adjektivisch used as "full-time") or honorary office. Here the term means full-time that in this way exercised activity represents the main profession and/or the main task of the exercising person. Thus it is usually connected that the organization, which has to assign a full-time activity, for which appropriate payment to provide has. Example: In many small municipalities the mayor is only honorary active (in Baden-Wuerttemberg in municipalities among 1.000 inhabitants), during which mayor in larger municipalities notices his activity full-time (rarely also "in the principal office").
