The product variation is a change of the product properties in timing. I.e. a "“old"” product is changed and replaced by a new. The "“old"” product is no longer continued to produce thereafter.

Examples: Passenger car companies bring new models out in existing classes: e.g. Gulf III, gulf IV

In contrast to it the product differentiation stands. There there are many different developments at the same time from a product. e.g. an actually identically constructed vehicle in different colors, stronger and weaker engines or than gasoline and diesel engined vehicles.
