The project definition is the first project phase and forms the basis of a project; here the obligatory defaults for the following project planning are made. To what extent the project definition took place formalized dependent on the respective project culture. A careful project definition is frequently already a crucial condition for the successful conclusion of a project. Errors in this early phase usually pull through themselves the entire course of the project and lead pretty often to the failure of projects.

To the project definition the following work procedures belong:

  • Establishment of the project
  • Definition of the aim of the project
  • Organization of the project
  • Organization of the process

At the beginning of a project stands the project request, which all relevant data, how problem description, costing and date goals as well as responsibilities take up. With its Verabschiedung the request changes itself to the official order for project.

The first task in the context of a project is clear and complete defining of the aim of the project. For this must be compiled together with the client one on the other in each case constructing a requirement catalog, product requirement specifications and a performance specification for the product and/or system which can be provided, whereby also the later change department is to be planned.

Further the organizational conditions for the project are to be created. The project manager and participating project committees must appointed and it must a suitable project organization be selected.

Finally the entire sequence organisation of the development process is to be determined. To it belong the establishment of development phases, points of break (obligation milestones), lines of development (cousin LINEs) and kinds of activity.
