The project structure plan (PSP) (English work BREAK down structure) an arrangement of the project is into flatable and controllable subtasks. In the context of the PSP the entire task of project is divided into work packages/subtasks (English work packages) and the relationship between the work packages is described. The project structure plan plots the project achievement (task of project) in a tree and is the common basis for the expiration, date and cost planning.
The project structure plan is a substantial part of the project starting phase and in the context of the project planning is provided. The monitoring of the PSP is substantial task of the Projektcontrolling. The PSP is to create a common understanding of the project extent for all project members - that means a standardization of the project language, commitments etc. The PSP is the common basis for the expiration and scheduling - the PSP is however no expiration, date or costs plan - as well as no project family tree. The PSP is the dismantling of the project into single steps, in which the project achievements and/or tasks of project which can be fulfilled are represented. A project structure plan is the complete hierarchical arrangement (hierarchy) of all work packages/subtasks of a project. Completeness means in the reversal conclusion that all work packages/subtasks do not stand in the PSP also not to the project extent belong.
The representation takes place in the form from lists (tabular) or family trees (tree structure). Due to better visualization the tree structure became generally accepted. The project structure plan an individual arrangement is fundamental and depends strongly on the actual conditions and setting of tasks. With simple projects standardized project structure plans can be used.
The elements of a project structure plan are called generally work packages. A work package: EN: work packages is one no longer far subdivided subtask on any level of the project structure plan. A substantial characteristic is the possibility of independent execution despite a component of the superordinate project task for the list of a project structure plan gives it no general rules. The designation of the work packages should be as clear however as possible. That is called same terms for same functions or objects uses. Therefore one avails oneself here of the coding of work packages, which are nearly always assigned automatically in the meantime in the framework by standard software. The coding serves for the clear identification and makes possible also the assortment of work packages.
The production of a project structure plan at the beginning of the project serves on the one hand the efficiency increase at the time of planning and execution of the project, since the entire capacity of the project is already represented in the starting phase. The moreover flatable and controllable work packages are provided from the outset, as well as created a basis for the Projektcontrolling because of the detailed arrangement. In addition the arrangement is to make possible also a clear allocation of work packages to the project members. A further substantial advantage is that the PSP represents a more stable instrument of the project management (project management) contrary to the date, costing and resource planning, since changes do not have into this effects on the PSP.
The project structure plan is not a temporal representation of the succession of the work packages within the project. The temporal component is represented in the context of the bar chart on basis of the project structure plan. The moreover an overview of the extent of utilization of project resources is not shown in the PSP. Planning, the efficient employment as well as the monitoring of the extent of utilization of project resources are main focus in the resource planning.
