The DIN 69904 project economy - project management systems - elements and structures defines the project surrounding field as the "“surrounding field, in which a project develops and is accomplished, that the project is affected and of its effects affected."”

The ICB designates additionally that the surrounding field formulates and evaluates the project, i.e. at the same time origin and Assessor of the project are. For the reciprocal effects between project and project surrounding field the ICB indicates a long set of possible factors: "“physical, ecological, social, psychological, cultural, political, economic, financial, legal, contractual, organizational, technological and aesthetic factors"”.

The definition of the concrete project surrounding field effected via the project environment analysis is part of product requirement specifications.
