Protector a usually prominent personality is called, that supports a meeting or an organization.

The support is frequently rather symbolic and consists hardly of more than the availability of the name, some protectors supports in addition, with active advertisement and uses its frequently good contacts to win further supporters.

In former times the term was used also for the monarch of a country, who had occupied another country than protectorate. This Euphemismus is today no longer usual.
