The right to self information (also self-information called) is fixed in "§"§ the 19 (concerning data processing of public places) and 34 (concerning data processing of closed places and public competition enterprises) of the Federal Law for Data Protection (BDSG):

"§ 19 BDSG - information at the concerning

(1) The concerning is on request information to give over

1. the data stored to its person, also so far it to the origin of these data refer,

2. the receivers or categories of receivers, to whom the data are passed on, and

3. the purpose of storage.

(1) The concerning can require information over

1. the data stored to its person, also so far it to the origin of these data refer,

2. Receiver or categories of receivers, to whom data are passed on, and

3. the purpose of storage.

The right to self information deduces itself from the fundamental right on informational self-determination. This fundamental right contained under others the right about it to be informed somebody else stored which personal data over one.

Self information can take place verbally, in writing in free form or on the basis a questionnaire.

In practice information request of the data collecting tanks frequently not or are not answered correctly. This resulted in a test accomplished by the television magazine Second Channel of German Television WISO at well 40 enterprises and authorities. During well-known inquiry agencies such as Creditreform and the SCHUFA as well as the fee introduction center GEZ fast and correctly over the stored data informed, refused other data collecting tanks the information or ignored the inquiry.
