The Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) is the public broadcasting corporation of Italy. It is a radio and a TV organization.
In Italy the first attempt transmissions of the television are started in the year 1934. On 3 January 1954 the RAI begins with the radiant emittance of the first regular television broadcasts in Italy. Two years later reach the television signals the entire Italian state territory. Due to the high initial costs for a television set there are at that time still few participants (360.000).
At present RAI on three terrestrial transferred television channels (Rai UN, Rai Due and Rai Tre) and three radio channels (radio UN, radio Due, radio Tre) sends. The moreover one the news station RaiNews24, Sportsender RaiSportSat and many further transmitters radiated over satellite belong to the institute.
In South Tyrol the RAI radiates two German-language transmitters, a radio program and a TV-transmitter, with name Rai transmitter Bozen.
Since 2004 the digital television programs of the RAI are radiated by way of trial (locally limited) terrestrial.
The RAI operates the extensive foreign service RAI international, which radiates programs world-wide over short wave and satellite. The emphasis of the programs is on messages and Sportberichten. One sends in Italian and 26 further foreign languages. In the evening hours daily two transmissions in German language with a length are sent from approx. 20 minutes for the target area Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The former president of the RAI, Lucia Annunziata, stepped to 4. May 2004 back. The lady journalist, who stands for opposition circles close, protested thereby against the "all-powerful influence" to the government Berlusconi on the RAI. It quit, after the supervisory board of the TV-institute had suggested several government near manager for the line of subsidiaries of the RAI.
