The designations of the ranks in Swiss army were specified by the parliament in article 102 of the military law. The Upper House of Parliament can introduce further degrees for the crew and the NCOs. From this right it made XXI in article 5 of the regulation for the army over the organization of the army (VOA) from 26 November 2003 use. For the change of the officer degrees however a law change is necessary.

Contrary to other armed forces the members of the Air Force of Swiss army carry the same degree designations and badges as the members of the army.

Introduction

General information

Who was carried into a certain degree, keeps him, even if he/they does not have the function no more (does not apply to specialized officers). From the compulsory military service may do dismissed member of the army their degrees with the additive, carried last, "“out of service"” (abbreviation: "“A D"”) resume.

The designations of the degrees are identical in each case in the armed services army, Air Force as well as in the logistics basis.

Female soldier is open all functions. They lead therefore the degree designations of their struggle-same male comrades. None "“(w)"” behind the degree as with the German Federal Armed Forces.

Specialized officers

The specialized officer (FachOf) is in the Swiss Milizsystem a member of the crew, the NCOs or the higher NCOs, which/due to special knowledge for an employment or durably into the officer conditions one carried. It concerns thereby not around a rank, but a function. For the determination of paying and the rights and obligations the specialized officer can be classified depending upon function in the degree stages between first lieutenant and Colonel.

General staff officers

The general staff officer (Gst OF) can be both a Miliz and a career officer. It is part of the corps of the general staff officers and for special executive functions is used. General staff officers dress officer degrees between major and Colonels in the additive i Gst for in the general staff (in former times there was also still Hptm i Gst). On the external seam of the trousers of the output suit they carry a thick black Stoffstreifen. contrary to the remaining staff officers are the general staff officers all former commanders of company and have thus guidance experience of many years. They go through extremely fastidious and intensive auxiliary training and transfer key functions in the staffs of large federations.
