Like all modern German armies the German armed forces in all three armed services (army, Air Force, war navy) knew three careers:
Army
Crews
University forming: Crews carried grey and/or black shoulder straps with the number of the regiment or an appropriate federation with waffenfarbener edge (Paspellierung):
- Infantry: knows
- Infantry, mountain troops: lightgreen
- Artillery: red
- Medic: grain-flower-blue
- Supply: light blue
- Remote alarm unit: lemon-yellow
- Kavallerie: gold-yellow
- Field gendarmes: orange
- Armor branch: pink
- Pioneers, tank pioneers: black
The actual badges of rank were carried at the left upper sleeve. Beyond that crews carried grey collar mirrors advanced in the above mentioned colors. At the crews there were the following ranks:
- Contactor (depending upon branch of service differently, thus Kanonier, rider, infantryman etc.): no badge
- Upper contactor: a grey sewn on star on dark document
- Private first class: a grey angle on dark document
- Upper private first class: two into one another-pushed angles
- Staff private first class: a twisted grey angle, over it a grey star
NCOs without Portepee
NCOs carried their badges on shoulder straps, as matte-silver Tresse as edge. Their collar mirrors corresponded to those of the crews.
- NCO (mountain troops: Upper hunter): U-shaped Tresse
- SSGs (artillery and Kavallerie: Unterwachtmeister): Tresse approximately around the shoulder strap
NCOs with Portepee
- Sergeants (artillery and Kavallerie: Wachtmeister. Like SSGs, but additionally a four-jagged matte-silver aluminum star
- Technical sergeants (artillery and Kavallerie: Upper being awake master). Like SSGs, but two stars
- Main sergeant (designation 1938 introduced to army, war navy and Air Force); only as utility position of the first sergeant; Artillery and Kavallerie: Main being awake master). Additionally to the badges of two so-called piston rings (from two strips NCO stress) ring around the top margin of both sleeve impacts.
The appointment generally took place after existence of the examination to the main sergeant. Into this utility position prefers technical sergeants and Csms appointed, who maintained their regular rank insignias beside the "piston rings". As long as they had the utility position, the address for both read (!) Ranks "main sergeants".
In the war increased also sergeants, every now and then even SSGs and NCOs were appointed first sergeants. Since they had not taken the examination, they were tituliert officially as "main sergeant service door".
The designation "main sergeant" replaced originally the designation "technical sergeant of the troop" used for the utility position of the first sergeant.
- Csms (artillery and Kavallerie: Staff being awake master; (Rank 1939 introduced to the three branches of service). Like SSGs, but three stars
Officer candidate in NCO rank
- Fahnenjunker NCO: like NCO, but with a double Unteroffiziertresse transverse to the shoulder strap.
- Fahnenjunker sergeant and/or wo1: like sergeants, but with a double Unteroffiziertresse transverse to the shoulder strap.
- Cw2 and/or Unterarzt with the medics: like technical sergeants, but with a double Unteroffiziertresse transverse to the shoulder strap. In addition cw2 carried the garrison cap of the officers with matte-silver hat cord.
Officers
Traditionally German officers carried shoulder pieces with waffenfarbener document; General staff officers carried it in karmesin, generals in high red. The shoulder pieces were from Aluminiumgespinst, twisted at second lieutenants and main people cords (flat cords), sewn next to each other, with staff officers quadruple twisted, with generals likewise from golden Gespinst with aluminiumfarbener insert. In addition if necessary four-jagged golden or silver stars were carried. The officer collar mirrors were not attached, somewhat larger at the high-closed anthrazitfarbenen collar and silver with raids in the above mentioned colors many officers, who participated actively in fighting, carried however their badges of rank. Thus they wanted to be prevented, be constituted and killed of hostile snipers as officers.

- Second lieutenant. No star (as per)
- First lieutenant. A golden star (OLt.)

- Captain, Kavallerie: Ride master. Two golden stars
Staff officers
- Major. No star
- Lieutenant colonel. A golden star
- Colonel. Two golden stars
Generals
Generals carried already since that 19. Jh. red collar mirrors with a golden representative sheet on it.
- Major general: no star
- Lieutenant general. a silver star
- General of the infantry, general of the artillery, general of the Kavallerie, the pioneers, the communications troops, supply, the mountain troop, the armor branch: two silver stars
- Colonel general: three silver stars
- Colonel general in the rank of a general field marshal
: four silver stars. Was a transition stage between colonel general and general field marshal. Rank was lent only occasionally to a colonel general, until this became by the award of the marshal staffs the field marshal. It had the same paying class as a colonel general, however the command authority of a general field marshal. (only until 1940)
