Realm marshal was a rank in the holy Roman realm of German nation, and in the third realm. Also the marshals of France or large marshals of its palace appointed from Napoleon to marshals of the Empire of d'Empire) are falsely called realm marshals. In Sweden also today realm march all are appointed.

The Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages in the Kriegsfall a realm marshal was appointed by the emperor, which was however usually only temporally limited. Thus e.g. became. Moritz appointed of Saxonia 1551 the realm marshal, in order to implement the realm eight against Magdeburg.

After the Middle Ages rank came into oblivion.

Realm marshal in the Second World War

The national socialists again created 1940 the rank of the German armed forces above the general field marshal. It had the exclusive purpose to continue the prominent position of the general field marshal von Hermann as highest military of the regime also after the appointment of further general field marshals.

The pieces of shoulder differed from those of the general field marshals with crossed marshal staffs by a realm eagle a wreath/ring with marshal staffs in the catches held. Also received a particularly valuable marshal staff, that was worked from ivory.

Rank realm marshal was however rather more formally than actually structural nature, he made formally alone before all other marshals the number two of the armed forces behind Adolf Hitler than commanders in chief, lost however its sense with the defeats and the power loss for a long time 1945 ago.

Post-war period

According to putting the realm marshal above over the general field marshals in the NVA the GDR a rank "“Marshal of the GDR"” was created above the army generals. The German Federal Armed Forces do not know marshal ranks.

Realm marshal in Sweden

In Sweden the meaning of the realm march all (Riksmarskalk or Riksmarsk) changed in the course of the time. In the Middle Ages the realm marshal was a boss of the Swedish Kavallerie. Later the realm marshal was assigned detached of it than military title. one changed the title in (Colonel marshal) for 1680, but changed 1722 again back to realm marshal. Nowadays the realm marshal is however a boss of the Swedish yard state. As such it participates in the festive opening of a new realm daily. Until 1982 the realm marshal had the right as an Excellency to be addressed.
