The register office is in Germany (since 1 October 1874 Prussia, starting from 1 January 1876 generally speaking area of the German Reich), in Austria (since 1939) like also in Switzerland (civil status authority since 1876) an office for the completion of the tasks, in particular for the guidance of the person condition books, planned in the law on registration of births marriages and deaths, for the production of descending documents among other things

Most of these official procedures concern

1. Births - entry in the birth book (i.d.R. after message from midwife, physician or hospital) - and exhibition of a birth certificate.
2. Marriage ceremonies - usually within solemn framework, with which the marriage promise and ring change takes place and which hold registrars of births, marriages and deaths at least a short speech.

   • In most countries the civil before the church wedding takes place and requires - as with this - two witnesses at the marriage. (Civil wedding requires no more witnesses at the marriage)
3. Deaths and exhibition of a death certificate. Many registrars of births, marriages and deaths work here also advisory or facilitate for the members the contact to funeral enterprises.

These three procedures may be only officially made, because they concern the society in high measure and abuses absolutely to be avoided are. The registrar of births, marriages and deaths being incumbent on tasks are affairs of the state, which are transferred after instruction the municipalities for fulfilment. Also the task range of the registrar of births, marriages and deaths became ever more extensive in the course of the time. Apart from the recording of the Personenstandes and the preparation (so-called quantity, since 1 August 1998 registration of the marriage ceremony, since 1 August 2001 regionally also registrations of life partnerships) and execution of the marriage ceremony and if necessary registration of life partnerships the exhibition from person condition documents belongs to the most frequent activities in the register office, where the registrar of births, marriages and deaths issues public documents as a certificating official within his division. Further tasks are among other things recording the acknowledgment of the paternity, recording and receipt of insurance in lieu of an oath in affairs of person condition, the authentication and receipt of named-legal explanations, the exhibition of marriage ability certifications, the guidance of the will card index, regional the receipt from explanations to the church withdrawal, the reports to other register offices and the co-operation with the population statistics.

Austria

The register office in Austria is an authority of the indirect federal administration and is subordinate the respective district captain shank or municipal authorities. It leads the birth, family (called since 1 January 1984 marriage book) and dying books, for persons, who did not belong to legally recognized church or church society, since a law from 9 April 1870, then for all citizens starting from 1 October 1895 in (at that time Hungarian) the castle country and starting from that 1. 1939 in the rest of Austria. Before the churches were responsible. Accordingly they implement also the exhibition of the respective documents.

Switzerland

In Switzerland a central (electronic) person condition register was furnished. Since this time the number of the registry offices sinks, since person condition books can be administered central.
