By residence obligation one understands that member of certain occupational groups (for example physicians, officials, soldiers, notaries, attorneys and ministers) it is obligated to select their residence in such a way that he lies in proximity of the job, and/or within its office district.

A physician must be able to reach for example in emergency within shortest time its practice. The official has to take its dwelling in such a way that the normal perception of his service business is not impaired. It can be instructed to take its dwelling within a certain distance of its agency. The notary has to take in principle at his seat also its dwelling. The dwelling of an attorney must lie in the associated court district.

The origins of the residence obligation lie generally stand-genuinly; for the first time she was formulated 1735 in a decree of the Prussian king Friedrich William I.
