The RIAS (abbreviation for: Broadcast in the American sector) was a broadcasting corporation with seat in the West-Berliner district beautiful mountain (Kufsteiner STR.), after the Second World War from 1946 to 1993 under control of the US-American crew authorities of radio broadcasting programs and a television program (1988 to 1992) spread.

History

1946-1949

On 7 February 1946 for the first time the wire broadcasting went in the American sector (SLIDE) over the voice grade channels into Berlin on transmission. Starting from 5 September 1946 the transmitter was to be received also with radios, so that it was renamed in "„broadcast in the American sector "“(RIAS). It called itself "„a free voice of the free world "“.

Also after establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany to 23. May 1949 was resumed the RIAS as transmitter of the USA, although in the meantime all other West German broadcasting corporations had been converted handed over into German hands and to institutes of the public right. Like that at that time still the NWDR was, starting from 1 June 1954 then the independent broadcasting corporation transmitter free Berlin responsible for West Berlin. The RIAS belonged as a subsection to the United States information Agency (USIA).

The 50's-years

From 1950 to 1959 the journalist and later SPD politicians were Egon Bahr editor-in-chief of the RIAS. Starting from 1 October 1950 the RIAS spread its program also on UKW. During the rising of the people in the GDR on 17 June 1953 the transmitter reported long time not by calling to the general strike, became however in the following days one of the most important sources of information.

On 1 November 1953 RIAS led its 2. Radio broadcasting program. Both programs, RIAS 1 and RIAS 2, were radiated by a transmitting plant in Berlin Britz on UKW and medium wave. Besides there was still another further transmitter in yard, over which the first program on medium wave and both programs on UKW were radiated. RIAS 1 was spread additionally over short wave by the transmitting plant in Berlin Britz.

Daily about five hours were radiated from 1954 to 1964 over the long wave transmitter of the Voice OF America (VoA) in Munich on 173 kHz. This transmitter was at that time the strongest broadcasting station in Europe. Thus both programs in the whole GDR could be received, however as "„Feindsender "“of the GDR into the 1950er-Jahren substantial were disturbed.

The RIAS busy prominent ones, which were then already recognized by the voice by the GDR public, moved as moderators gladly from the GDR, an example is an actor Ingolf Gorges. The program was a merge program with information, music and maintenance transmissions (legendary advice endings with Hans Rosenthal or the Insulaner of Neumann) and addressed itself primarily also to listener inside and listeners in the GDR.

The 60's until 80's-years

May 1992 was signed between the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the USA an agreement over the establishment of the RIAS Berlin commission, which stepped on 26 October 1992 into force. The commission made it's duty to further continue "„the tradition of German-American co-operation in the broadcast and as new tradition in the transatlantic medium dialogue meetings and connections between broadcast journalists at both sides of the ocean makes possible "“.

On 1 June 1992 RIAS 2 was denationalized and renamed in rs2. rs2 sends today in Berlin on same frequency 94.3 MHz as in former times RIAS 2, as well as a net of further UKW frequencies in Brandenburg. The Hofer RIAS2-Frequenz 91.2 MHz was left open 1992. The former citizens of Berlin medium wave frequency 855 kHz of RIAS 2 today for DRM transmissions and special transmissions of the Germany radio one uses. RIAS 1 was resumed first and came up to 1 January 1994 together with DS culture in Germany radio Berlin (today Germany radio culture). This program forms common with the Deutschlandfunk (Cologne) the Germany radio (a body of the public right).

The former radio house of the RIAS is because of the Hans Rosenthal place directly at the Rudolph savage park and/or people park Wilmersdorf with the so-called RIAS playground and is today the seat of the transmitter Germany radio culture.
