Richard Baruch Benedikt Goldschmidt (*12. April 1878 in Frankfurt/Main; "† 24 April 1958 in Berkeley (the California/USA) was a German biologist and Genetiker.

Life and working

Richard Goldschmidt was the son Frankfurt buyer and visited there also the Goethe High School. it made Abitur for 1899 and studied first at the University of Heidelberg medicine and Zoologie with Otto and Carl Gegenbaur.

Subsequently, study at the University of Munich with Richard Hertwig, where it manufactured its thesis. It became 1902 with Otto in Heidelberg the Dr. phil. attained a doctorate.

Afterwards it worked again at Richard Hertwig as an assistant in Munich. 1904 Habilitation in Zoologie with a work over the Karyokinese of the Chromidien of the Protozoen.

1909 he became an extraordinary professor at the University of Munich.

1914 appointment to the again-created institute for emperor William for biologist as department managers for genetics of the animals, 1919 second director of the institute. Its colleague responsible for the plants was Carl Correns, one of the three rediscoverers of the Mendel laws. He co-operated there among other things also with max Hartmann, Otto Meyerhof, Carl new mountain and Otto Heinrich being castle closely.

1917 it was interned with a journey war conditionally in the USA and could return only 1919 again to Berlin.

1935 were expatriated Goldschmidt because of its Jewish descent by the national socialists and emigrierte into the USA. There it was appointed in the same year as the professor for genetics and Zytologie to the university by California in Berkeley.

Research

After it operated development-physiological research first with Richard Hertwig, it turned to the gene physiology and was derived from investigations with butterflies (Lymantria dispar) a general theory of the sex regulation.

Far discovered Goldschmidt among other things the fact of the Konstanz of cell number at Nematoden at Caenorhabditis, it worked over the development and healing of stress Expression at Drosophila.

He took over very early the conception of the genes lively of Hermann Staudinger as macromolecules and created on it a physiological theory of the transmission, which accepted however still the proteins (in place of the as exclusive gene components, however in principle the today's conceptions very close came. Thus Goldschmidt was also one the Wegbereiter of the Neodarwinismus.
