The Sahara Zypresse (Cupressus dupreziana), is a kind that the (Cupressaceae).

Occurrence

It seems endemically in the Tassili to n'Ajjer massif in the Zentralsahara Algeria. The few copies (153 - 213 depending upon source) at the nature location are more n'Ajjer and strongly threatened from becoming extinct part of the UNESCO world nature inheritance Tassili.

They form there together with Sahara Myrthe a light tree existence, for 300 km far away from the next tree.

Description

The Sahara Zypresse resembles the related Trauerzypresse, differs however by their clearly blue colored sheets with a white resin mark on each sheet. The smaller impulses often stand in one level they have smaller taps with only 1.5 - 2.5 cm length.

The still more similar Atlas Zypresse is regarded of some authors than a of the Sahara Zypresse (C. dupreziana var. atlantica).

The highest living tree is 20m highly, the majority of the existing trees is very old (estimations go from more than 2000 years), while the new generation is very small because of the increasing drynesses in the Sahara.

Location

The Saharazypresse seems only in the Tassili n'Ajjer mountain massif in altitudes between 1000 and 1800 to m NN. There there can be frost to - 7 "°C.

The location consists of sandstone rock, which lead due to the altitude somewhat more waters than the surrounding desert. The yearly precipitation amounts to only 33mm. The location is ecologically isolated by the surrounding desert.

Vermehrung

Possibly as result of the isolation and small population, the Sahara Zypresse developed a singular systemsystem system of male Apomixis.

The seeds contain only of heiress formation of the male Pollens, female "“parents"” make available only nutrients (Pichot et al., 2000). The Atlas Zypresse does not have this characteristic.

Use

The Sahara Zypresse is cultivated occasionally in south and Western Europe, partly with the goal of kind preservation, partly as ornamental plant.
