The Sandarakbaum (Tetraclinis articulata), also Gliederzypresse mentioned, is the only kind from the kind Tetraclinis. It belongs to the Unterfamilie Cupressoideae in that the (Cupressaceae). (Synonyms: Thuja articulata, Callitris quadrivalvis, Cupressus articulata). This Taxon is close to the kinds Platycladus, Microbiota and Calocedrus much. In the appearance it resembles that Lebensbaum (Thuja), relatives close. Against wrong information this kind has to do however nothing with similar tree species in Australia.

Spreading

The spreading of the plant hands Libya from Morocco over the northern ranges from Algeria and Tunesien until. On the Atlas it forms whole for southern Spain and on Malta gives it small, populations threatened by becoming extinct. The Sandarakbaum is the national tree of Malta; nevertheless the kind straight is there endangered strongly.

Description

This concerns bush or slowly growing Konifere, which reaches a stature height of 6 to 8 (rarely up to 15) meters and a master diameter of 40 cm. The sheets are 1 to 5 mm long.

The Gliederzypresse is getrenntgeschlechtig The taps are 10 to 15 mm long. They are at the beginning of green and become brown when maturing. From dusting to mature seeds lasts it about eight months. The seeds are 5 to 7 mm long and 2 mm wide, them have a paper-like wing at each side.

Use

From the kind Sandarak is won for smoking.
