In most countries outside of the USA Sassafras is regarded due to its high content of Safrol, which is krebserregend, as poison plant. Also in the USA today for commercially manufactured root Beer is used only more artificial Sassafras flavour; some private producers use however further Sassafras. Safrol supplies also a raw material for the production of MDMA (Ecstasy).
A characteristic of the Sassafrasbaums is that at a plant three different Blattformen can occur.
