The tank or Schlangenhautkiefer (Pinus heldreichii), usually Lorica Kiefer mentioned, is a resinous wood plant (Pinophyta) from the family of the (Pinaceae). It grows on rock and forms at its locations as well as the red beech usually the timber line.
The resplendent crust divided into much-angular plates, which a little reminds of the tank of a crocodile and was named-coining/shaping, is remarkable. Characteristically also the pittoreske rotated stature of Lorica Kiefern those individually or in small groups grow. In small Lorica forests against it this Kiefer grows quite straight. She is usually at rocky, often exposed locations, which it a singular appearance lends. It becomes pretty often up to 1000 years old.
Typical vegetation units of the Schlangenhautkiefer is the Pinion heldreichii. This azonalen xerobasiphilen Schlangenhautkiefer of rock forests is with that Dinari Karst Blockhalden Tannenwald Oreoherzogio Abietetum illyricae Fuk. on rock portions and wind-affected burrs as continuous pioneers of skeleton-rich locations for example trained in the Orjen in Montenegro beautifully.
It occurs in some mountains of the Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegowina, Bulgaria, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, north Greece) and grows as Eiszeitrelikt at the timber line in two places in the southern Apennin (Monte Pollino and Monte siren). Here one finds it at heights between 900 and 2500 meters. The however long-lived Kiefer is mostly on lime. Typically in the border region of the forest in the Karst mountains of the Orjen (Montenegro), Prenj (Herzegowina), Pirin (Bulgaria), as well as pin DOS (Greece). Multi-hundred-year copies with master diameters of 2 m are pretty often.
