The scythe (old high German. segensa = the cutting) is simple rural equipment for cutting off) grass and grain. It has one approx. 60 - for a long time, in the back and itself forward to a point tapering, curved blade from forged steel, the Sensenblatt in such a way specified spreads 90 cm. The sheet is led in swinging motion (Schnittrichtung from right to left) arc-shaped closely across the earth by the cut property which can be harvested.

(In numerous films and music videos this is wrongly shown today: Often here the worker draws back similarly as with a gulf racquet and leads the scythe away during the back momentum in a motion drawing back far from the soil. This representation rises from a unprofessional conception of the work with a scythe).

The Sensenblatt can be divided into the Dengel (a approx. 5 mm broad part of the gumption sheet and the cutting edge), turned away from it to the back and the beginning, with which it is connected with the handle, the Hamme.

For leading the scythe particularly more designed a wood or a metal handle man-high for it is used ("“Worb"”, "“scythe tree"”, "“scythe handle"” or "“Sensengriff"”), which is screwed onto the metal blade down. An older type of mounting uses a metal ring and a wood wedge. The scythe tree is provided with two grasps, depending upon region with very different techniques.

The Sensenblatt must be maintained with use regularly. That means once in shorter distances resharpening (sharpens) with a Wetzstein, which one tended to in former times always lead in a sharpening stone owner ("“Kumpf"”) with itself, on the other hand the "“Dengeln"”, whereby the Dengel is back springily worked on by means of the Finn of a metal hammer of the Hamme and with springs. In addition, the Dengeln serves also for sharpening the sheet, smooths larger Scharten in the cut out.

While the farmer wars of the Middle Ages the scythe was used of the revolting farmers as simple weapon.

The scythe is also well-known as the tool of the Schnitter and the Gevatter death (the "“scythe man"”).

Nowadays the scythe within agrarian range was replaced by the combine and the In the households with garden now or engine scythe dominate. However it is still indispensable for the Mahd in inaccessible areas and still proves its use even in poorer countries.

In Achern (bathe) one finds the only scythe museum ("“scythe and local history museum"”) of Germany. The museum visitor carries out with the Rundgang after, as in 30 work procedures from a small piece of steel a flexibly swinging scythe becomes. At the same time he gets views of the history of the technology. The scythe museum is an example for early manufacturing and employer-employee relationships.
