The shed spruces are getrenntgeschlechtig The male taps stand individually. The spherical female taps are holzig, the Zapfenschuppen are triangular. Per Zapfen-Schuppe develop three to six oblong, thin seeds, which have two similarly shaped wings. The seed-ripe takes place within a yearly. The seeds are spread over the wind. Keimlingen have two (Kotyledonen).

Use

There is very beautiful it prospers well in areas with much precipitation, with mild winters and cools for summers, like on the British islands, at the Pacific coast of North America and in New Zealand.

Systematics

There are three kinds (or two kinds and a hybrid):

  • shed spruce (Athrotaxis of cupressoides): The sheets are short (3 to 5 mm). The taps are small (1 to 1.5 cm), it are closely to the branch pressed. The kind has its area in the western Tasmanien (Launceston, Lake Saint Clair, Mount Field national park) at heights between 640 and 1067 m NN. The oldest copy of the kind is about 1000 years old.
  • Crescent-shaped shed spruce (Athrotaxis of selaginoides): The sheets are longer than with the other kinds (8 to 14 mm), them are away from the branch. The taps are larger than with the other kinds (2 to 3 cm). Their area extends from the mountain regions of the central plateau up to the west coast Tasmaniens, in altitudes between 914 and 1219 m NN. The oldest living tree of the kind is 777 years old. The wood is very softly with fine grain, it is for a very long time durable and weather-proof. It was used in the boat building, for Schindeln and for the building by ochestras by music instruments.
  • Athrotaxis laxifolia: It a hybrid from A. of cupressoides A. of selaginoides. The sheets are (4 to 7 mm), it are briefly away from the branch. The taps lie in size and appearance between their two kinds of parents (1.5 to 2.5 cm). They grow in altitudes of 900 to 1200 m NN. The oldest well-known tree of the kind is 1300 years old. The wood is soft and reddish.
