The Sichel is a tool for cutting grain and grass, consisting of forward itself a tapering, concave curved blade (usually from steel) with a short wooden handle. It differs from the scythe by the clearly shorter handle. The Grassicheln is short, but very strongly curved.

The Sichel is one of the oldest culture tools. With the ancient Greeks the Sichel was symbol of the agriculture, therefore it was an attribute of the goddess Demeter. The Roman historian Tacitus reports that celtic Druiden used golden Sicheln for rituals. In different archaeological cultures the Sichel is a frequent grave with gift, particularly in the graves, in which the nebem human body also its riding horse was bestattet.

Hammer and Sichel a symbol for the "“worker and farmer state"” are crossed with one another in "“material existing socialism"”, e.g. on the flag of the former Soviet Union.
