The South German broadcast (Southern German Broadcasting Corporation) was up to the fusion with the southwest radio (Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation) said to the southwest broadcast (SWR) 1998 the national broadcasting corporation for the northern part of Baden-Wuerttemberg, more exactly, the area of the country bathing existing to 1952.
The Southern German Broadcasting Corporation was an institute of the public right and member of the pool of broadcasting corporations with head office in Stuttgart. Studios existed in Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn and Ulm as well as in Bonn.
1924 were created in Stuttgart the South German broadcast AG which at the 11. May 1924 with the first radio ending the transmit mode took up. 1925 joined the society the "German realm Reich".
1930 took the South German broadcast AG in (today in the Enzkreis) a medium-wave transmitter in enterprise. It was the first German high-power broadcasting station. 1933 were converted the South German broadcast AG into a GmbH, but one year later was already dissolved the GmbH again and the Stuttgart transmitters than realm transmitter Stuttgart part of the largeGerman broadcast. It would send until 5 April 1945.
On 3 June 1945 by the American crew the transmitter radio Stuttgart was furnished, which spread a program lasting several hours daily over medium wave. Leader was Captain Fred G. Taylor, the later U.S. - Director of the RIAS. 1947 received the transmitter a German director. 1949 were transferred the transmitter "radio Stuttgart" into an institute of the public right for the country bathing and renamed in South German broadcast. One year later it was initial member of the pool of broadcasting corporations, to which it belonged up to the fusion with that Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation 1998.
Also after formation of the country Baden-Wuerttemberg 1952 was the Southern German Broadcasting Corporation national broadcasting corporation for the northern part of the country. Baden-Wuerttemberg was thus for many years the only Land of the Federal Republic, which had two public national broadcasting corporations (Southern German Broadcasting Corporation and Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation). This condition was only terminated with the fusion of both transmitters 1998.
Apart from the name "South German broadcast" was used in the 60's and 70's-years parallel also the name "south radio Stuttgart".
The Southern German Broadcasting Corporation radiated one radio broadcasting program until 1950 only out (later than Southern German Broadcasting Corporation and/or south radio 1 designates 1). Then that took to 2. Radio broadcasting program Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 2 and/or south radio 2 over UKW its transmit mode up. On 1 November 1964 likewise the 3 followed over UKW first as "immigrant worker program". Radio broadcasting program Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 3, which was developed starting from 1 October 1979 as music and service wave to the full program. It was temporary also under the names "south radio 3" and "radio 3 south radio Stuttgart" on transmission.
On 5 April 1969 the Southern German Broadcasting Corporation as well as the southwest radio (Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation) and the Saarland broadcast (SR) for the Lands of the Federal Republic Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and for the Saarland started the third television program "southwest 3". It was the last one of its kind in Germany (without the programs from the new Lands of the Federal Republic). The program was removed step by step to the full program (since 1971 daily transmissions).
In the blanking gap of this program the Southern German Broadcasting Corporation started 1984 its regional videotex offer under the designation "south radio text", which was together led later with the "Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation text" started at the same time to the "southwest text" (place of event is today the national radio house in Mainz).
Into the 1980er years started that 4. Radio broadcasting program Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 4, which radiated immigrant worker programs predominantly and transferred large meetings.
On 1 January 1991 that became 2. Radio broadcasting program Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 2 with that 2. Radio broadcasting program of the southwest radio (Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation 2) into the new culture channel "S2 culture" merged. At the same time took likewise together with that Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation organized 4. Radio broadcasting program "S4 Baden-Wuerttemberg" its transmit mode up. In this program the program Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 4 came up.
To 17. May 1997 started the Southern German Broadcasting Corporation as well as that Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation the youth multi-medium THE THING in the context of the DAB pilot project Baden-Wuerttemberg. This concerns a digital 24-Stunden-Angebot for young people is spread between 14 and 24 years, that over DAB and addr, in the Internet, as well as since 2000 over several small UKW short-distance transmitters. THE THING connects the media sound broadcasting, television and Internet to a new offer.
All programs Southern German Broadcasting Corporation would still send until 30 August 1998. On 1 September 1998 the programs of the SWR took up their transmit mode. Officially Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 1 and Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation 1 in SWR1 Baden-Wuerttemberg came up, S2 culture in SWR2 were transferred, Southern German Broadcasting Corporation 3 together with SWF3 in SWR3 and S4 Baden-Wuerttemberg in SWR4 Baden-Wuerttemberg renamed. The youth program THE THING was continued to lead by the SWR. Actually the fusion represented however an assumption Southern German Broadcasting Corporation by the Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation, by which the director, a majority of the program responsible persons and (before between Southern German Broadcasting Corporation and Southwestern German Broadcasting Corporation very different) the program culture were taken over.
The third television program "southwest 3" was transferred southwest television" into the two programs "southwest German Federal Armed Forces" and "southwest RP", today of ".
