The Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) is a kind of coniferous tree from that of the firs (Abies) in that the (Pinaceae).
The Spanish fir is domestic in Spain; it seems there in the mountains at heights between 1000 and 2000 meters to NN. The area is arranged into four subsections: Into the Sierra de read Nieves lies the largest existence with 550 hectares, in the Sierra del Pinar, the de Ronda and the Sierra Bermeja gives it only small residues. The Spanish fir prefers warm, kalkhaltige soils. At north slopes it occurs in pure existence, in deeper situations forms it mixed woodlands with stone oak and beach Kiefer. In mild areas of Central Europe the Spanish fir is winter hard.
The Spanish fir up to 30 meters highly and reaches diameters up to 1.5 meters. The red-brown buds are strongly verharzt. The rigid needles stand closely and schraubig at the branches, sting however not; they are up to 2 centimeters long and colored dark green. Bloom time is from April to May; the seeds mature in October. The winged, until 1 centimeter of large seed sits into up to 15 centimeters is enough, brown taps.
The breed form "Glauca" has blue needles. The copies which can be seen with us in the gardens and parks to belong mostly to this breed form; the type is to be seen many rarer.
