A specialist lawyer is an attorney, who can lead the title of a specialist lawyer within a certain range in a certain right area over special knowledge and experiences ordered and as additional job title.

The authorization for leading the specialist lawyer designation is lent from the responsible bar to condition of the specialist lawyer order (FAO).

An attorney can lead maximally two specialist lawyer designations. To whose acquisition must it at least three years continuously as an attorney certified be and prove to have in the right area concerned special theoretical knowledge and practical experiences. As proof of the special theoretical knowledge usually the participation in a 120 hours comprehensive course and the existence of three five-hour examinations, often also still another discussion verbal examination mentioned are demanded. For the proof of the practical experiences is a certain number of worked on cases from the respective field of activity (e.g. Family right: 120 cases in three years) necessarily. After acquisition of the specialist lawyer designation the attorney must train himself further annually in the area of the specialist lawyer designation or publish scientifically.

At present there are specialist lawyer designations for the following right areas:

• Administrative law
• Tax law
• Social right
• Industrial law
• Family right
• Criminal law
• Insolvency law
• Insurance law
• Medicine right
• Renting and residential property law
• Traffic law
• Building and architect right
• Vomit
• Transport and forwarding business right

To 1 July 2006 two further specialist lawyer designations are introduced:

• Commercial legal protection
• Handels and corporate law

After the resolution of the statute meeting (lawyer parliament) from 3 April 2006 in the future two further specialist lawyer designations are to be introduced:

• Author and law of communication media
• Information technology right

The appropriate change of the specialist lawyer order for the specialized bars requires still the agreement of the Federal Department of Justice.
