The designation specialized officer is in most armies a given function and no actual rank.

In Swiss army the specialized officer leads a special rank insignia, although he is not specified in the legislation explicitly under the ranks. Soldiers and NCOs with special expertise can be entrusted if necessary with officer functions. A specialized officer has the same rights and obligations as an officer in same function (captain, major or lieutenant colonel) and refers a function pay according to the degree. Specialized officers have to carry all courses and employments out connected with the degree, with exception of the training services for a higher degree. If the officer function is not any longer exercised, then the appointment as the specialized officer is left, if he/they exercised the function during at least six years.

In the German Federal Armed Forces there is also the specialty service career. Sergeants, who brought special achievements out, can change into the military-technical service and reach theoretically in this career the rank of the staff captain.
