The term straw (that, - [e] s, no Plural) is a comprehensive term for out-threshed and afterwards dried stems and in the broader sense of any arable crops, strictly speaking only from grain.

In contrast to it hay consists of air-dried, cut fodder plants, i.e. usually of grasses, in addition, for example of clover. Hay is from the beginning for the use as animal fodder intended, while straw likewise as feeds, however in addition as if intersperse, if necessary as burning or building material (building of straw balls), as well as raw material for (art -) work relating to crafts (e.g. Strohflechterei) or as roof use finds.

Barley straw has a clearly brighter color opposite straw from other varieties of grain and takes up bad humidity.

Long time served it as bed straw; since the stems break soon, the camp becomes fast hard.

Etymologisch is meant actually connected the term straw with old and medium high-German expression stro (strew), thus scattering and/or spreading.

A further expression for straw reads and is in the rheinischen dialect to be found.
