A stylus is a writing or a drawing equipment with a water-soluble colored mine. As shroud of the mine frequently painted wood is used as with pencils.

History

Over the history of the stylus relatively few are well-known: It is safe that already beginning 20. Century styluses were world-wide used. The name stylus comes along, because by the copying writing still castings can be made on damp paper, thus copies.

Production and worth knowing

The production of the stylus corresponds to that of the pencil in the rough one, apart from the color mine. It consists of tar coloring materials as e.g. methyl-violet, phenol-blue, Resorzinblau, aniline blue, Nigrosin for black and Eosin for red. Further components are fats, bonding agents as well as minerals like fat clay/tone, talcum powder and kaolin according to the colored pencil. These coloring material mixtures are poisonous!

A freshly angespitzer stylus has one metallically, often violet shining mine, which discolours after some hours matt and darkly. The mines can be intensified needle-like, are at the same time however very brittle. A pass with a stylus registers therefore usually substances or broken off mine components into the wound, which can lead walking fabric damage slowly in front to poisonings and. Therefore today some safety precautions are meaningful, e.g. not reciprocally anspitzen, pointed wastes do not blow away and particularly for transport a protective cap attach. Styluses see themselves mark things crates etc. finding to lead or colored pencils often deceptively similarly and sometimes in older accumulations of pin, together under harmless other pins. They are however no toy and must by children be kept far!

Application

This type of pin was very far common before the invention of the ball-point pen. This concerns that recorder, which fishing rod-hit a corner typically forwards and during the use at the point or was taken briefly into the mouth, which today bsw. still in silent movies to see is. The color intensity on the paper increases thereby clearly. Before the Giftigkeit of these pins generally admits became, (usually violet) a color mark at lip or tongue point of attorney, secretaries, nurses, librarians etc. was an indication of clerical work. Also discolorations at fingertips and - nails decrease/go back to these pins.

Styluses today still are in use. Copying writing can away-erase, contrary to the pencil writing, only extremely heavily, be received there some the substances processed in the mine similarly as Eisengallustinte an indissoluble connection with the paper. With erasing therefore paper layers must be abgeraspelt, which later with the naked eye visible is. Copying writing is less UVsteady and bleaches with the time out, with increased humidity wins it however immediately again clearly at color intensity. The distinction between pencil and stylus writing, which appear grey in dry condition both, can take place therefore with a damp finger mark, whereby the stylus writing discolours briefly violet, but again into the starting situation back dries.

Advantages of styluses

Styluses are document genuine and therefore become also today still if also not frequently, in place of stylograph or ball-point pen for drawing cheques, documents as well as contracts and in the bookkeeping assigned. Since they can be confounded easily with pencils, the user does not notice possibly that he uses a document-genuine recorder.

Because there are also erasable ball-point pen types and many non-document-genuine ink for stylographs, the use of violet styluses remains a reliable method of the signing. They can serve notaries and attorneys, who attach importance on traditions, as symbol of the stability. Stylus signatures are however often rejected by offices, if one does not know the difference to the pencil there.

Strange thing

Eosin is used in the Histologie for coloring cells. In water one can use dissolved red stylus mine therefore also for the microscopy for the of micro organisms, whatever are directly killed by the coloring material.
