A shovel (of the old-high-German Scuvala, medium high-German Schuvel), colloquially in Germany also Schippe or , is a tool for moving loose soil.
For the release from harder soil however a spade is used.
Kinds
Larger shovels with in front straight shovel sheet are used for moving light soil (sand).
Smaller shovels with curved shovel sheet are used for moving heavy soil (loam, clay/tone, etc.).
Most usual kinds in Germany
- Holsteiner shovel straight front edge; to digging ground connection and other material masses.
- Frankfurt shovel pointed approximately approaching sheet, to the Aufgraben
Beyond that common
- Bavarian shovel with pointedly approaching only very weakly curved sheet for easier penetration into heavier, stonier soils.
- Ansbacher shovel pointedly approaching, 5-eckiges very flat sheet without edge
- Hallenser edge shovel with square, flat sheet with edge, mostly from aluminum for taking up lighter bulk material, like e.g. Grain
- Dutchman shovel similarly Holsteiner, however with arc-shaped curved front edge to the free free of water ditches
Further meanings
- A dust pan or a muck shovel, made of plastic or metal, is often used together with a hand-brush.
- A snow shovel is a special, broad shovel, which one uses for the clearance of snow.
- Children use small shovels, often from plastic, for playing in the sand box or at the beach.
- The larger remarks on an excavator are designated likewise than shovels.
- With turbines and water wheels (e.g. Mill) the rotors with the shovels, which are propelled by the fluid, fastened on it, are called impeller.
