Germany

The cultivation of sleep poppy was forbidden (and is) in many states. The inclusion of the cultivation of poppy into the meant the sudden end of the acquisition-moderate cultivation of poppy, before that the 2 in Germany. World war, in which GDR was far common even up to the reunification. The cultivation of sleep poppy is in Germany not permitted, also not as ornamental plant, and represents an offence against the (BtMG). This can be punished with up to 5 years detention and/or fine. The permission for the morphine-poor sort "“Przemko"”, which was available since 1996, was in the meantime again withdrawn, as the Bundesopiumstelle communicated. The regulation, after which private people with special permission may cultivate 10 m poppy, does not apply.

Austria

In contrast to Germany the cultivation of the sleep poppy is permitted in Austria and looks on a long tradition back, which goes back into the resounding place time. The Austrian cultivated area of poppy amounted to in the year 2004 approximately 1,700 hectares. Main cultivation areas are the northern upper and Lower Austria (forest quarter). While in upper Austria mainly are cultivated to blue poppy places, the forest quarter is famous for its grosssamigen grey poppy.
