The golden steering wheel is one of the most well-known German honors for new automodels. It is lent since 1976 by the newspaper "“PICTURE on SUNDAY (BamS)"”.

History

The price decreases/goes back to an initiative of the publisher Axel Springer, which assigned the BamS author at that time Dr. Hermann Harster execution. Contrary to other autoprices like for example the "“car of the yearly"” the winners are determined not by journalists or readers, but in two-day test travels of an independent jury from specialists, running drivers and prominent drivers. The award price takes place in each year in November in Berlin. With the assumption of the editorial responsibility by the BamS Ressortleiter at that time car, Peter Maahn, the criteria of the honor were professionalisiert in the year 1979. In the course of the years the golden steering wheel developed to an institution, which is after an inquiry the most important German honor for automobiles. Maahn handed the responsibility to 2000 over after 21 years in December to its successor Joachim Walther.

The jury

Among the international jury, which participated in the last 30 years in the decision, ranked in three decades among other things: Sir Peter Ustinov, Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, walter Thomas Gottschalk, David Coulthard, Peter Maffay, Barbara nod Heidfeld or Hans Joachim stucco. Only two Juroren (Hans's gentleman man and Erhard shrink) were involved in all so far 30 decisions.

The award

Up to the years 2000 to 2002 the award always took place in the Springer publishing house house in Berlin. In the three years mentioned the golden steering wheel was transferred in the context of a Fernsehshow by the Second Channel of German Television from the citizen of Berlin airport Tempelhof. The most well-known award was on 9 November 1989, when in Berlin the wall fell.
