Treasurer is the conventional name of the specialized official for financing in the municipalities. In South German municipalities for it also the designation city male nurse or municipality male nurse is common.

The term descends from latin term camera = vault. The treasurer had the supervision over the chamber and the treasure. Later it lost this function to the treasurer. Today still is the city treasurer of the directors/conductors of the financial administration of a city; Counterpart with federation and Landesverwaltungen: Representative for the household (BdH).

Originally the treasurer held one of the old offices for yard. The ore treasurers of the Roman-German emperors led the Reichszepter in the coat of arms. With a coronation/culmination they carried in front it for the again-crowned king. With the coronation/culmination meal of the holy Roman realm they had to hand in addition a bowl water and a cloth to the king for hand washing. This symbolic task was accomplished in later time of deputies (see hereditary office). The ore treasurer of the HRR was the Mark count of Brandenburg.

Martin Luther translated the title of the highest financial official of the queen (Kandake) with treasurer (Apostelgeschichte 8.26-40) in the new will of the Bible.
