By treatment of procedures one understands the computer-assisted treatment of procedures by specialists of an administration (e.g. the treatment of requests for national achievements) givenr by the emergence of the procedure (request position) up to the final completion along, usually branched working on ways. The term "“procedure"” is used both on the process and the matching documents, which develop during a process and lead to the document formation. Outside of the public administration of business processes one speaks. This is called business process management.

A procedure goes through successively, partially also at the same time, several conditions (see under status) with often different editors. Depending upon status different working on activities are necessary or permissible.

Basic element of a application software for treatment of procedures is the guidance mentioned along the pre-defined working on way, also work routine (workflow).

In practice there are mainly two methods, in order to support the treatment of procedures electronically:

• Workflow management systems steer the working on way of an electronic document status-dependently quasi from job to job. Actual work contents of the processing however are supported either not at all or only indirectly by call of other programs. Such systems usually combined with a document management system for the electronic document attitude.

• However primarily if the contentwise treatment of structured actual datas with display screen masks is to be steered by the program ("“actual data-oriented treatment of procedures"”), then typical applications of data bases are used, either individual conceptions or industry solutions.

A special form is the automatic treatment of procedures. If some or all working on steps without effort of a specialist are possible, the treatment of procedures can partly or completely automated on a server will be processed. Automatic working on steps are usually paged out into night processes. Typically for this is the nocturnal mass pressure of answer or reminders.
