To the building of tunnels tunnel drilling machines can be used. They are particularly suitable for tonige and lehmige soils. Also with the tunnel construction in the loose rock, which is ungeignet by means of explosive technique for propulsion, such large machines are used. The drilling head under normal conditions a diameter from 10 to 12 meters. The largest ever assigned drilling head had a diameter of about 15 meters. The entire mechanism in the rear part of the drilling head has a length of 150 to 200 meters.

Boring takes place in several steps:

  • the actual propulsion, with which with pressure rotary pinion-shaped cutters the working face clears away,
  • the building of rings, with which after propulsion the lines and seals the wall with a Erektor. Afterwards the drill press forces itself away again from the rings.

The entire propulsion head is waterproof separate from the trailer, so that also under water (for example under the Elbe or in the water-prominent rock) can be bored. The working face is then at positive pressure.

With the help of a foam plant, which with Tensiden and water under pressure produces foam, the working face can be solidified in such a manner in the soft underground that sandy soils can be drilled out like tonige soils. In the muddy soil the environment with liquid nitrogen is frozen.

There are world-wide only few companies, which manufacture these machines. In Germany there is the companies gentleman Mr. AG from Schwanau and WIRTH GmbH from Erkelenz.Die company Robbins in the USA is a further manufacturer.
