To the building of tunnels tunnel drilling machines can be used. They are particularly suitable for tonige and lehmige soils. Also with the tunnel construction in the loose rock, which is ungeignet by means of explosive technique for propulsion, such large machines are used. The drilling head under normal conditions a diameter from 10 to 12 meters. The largest ever assigned drilling head had a diameter of about 15 meters. Boring takes place in several steps:

With the help of a foam plant, which with Tensiden and water under pressure produces foam, the working face can be solidified in such a manner in the soft underground that sandy soils can be drilled out like tonige soils. In the muddy soil the environment with liquid nitrogen is frozen.
