The type bar is the prevailing technology, with which mechanical typewriters work. Each key is connected with a lever, on which several characters (types) are fastened mostly in raised, mirror-wrong form. If the user presses on a key, he lets the associated lever snap toward the paper. The character on the lever presses on the ribbon present before the paper and leaves a casting on the paper.
Mostly two characters one above the other attached (e.g. h and H) are, sometimes also three on a type bar. The mechanics of the typewriter are in such a way laid out that only in each case one of the characters with the ribbon comes into contact. If one wants to write another indication fastened on the type bar, the lever mechanics or the clamped paper must be moved upward or down; this happens with the shift key.
Type bars have the disadvantage that they hook themselves during the fast writing easily. Electrical typewriters therefore mostly use balls or print wheels.
