In the case of modern typewriters and printers for personal computers, today any longer (not offered), a print wheel is used as carrier of the representable indications (types). The named-giving print wheel belongs to an electromechanical printing element with heading for digital electronics.
There are two different construction principles of Typenraddruckwerken:
With the so-called "continuous runner" the print wheel constantly turns with a constant number of revolutions. In the simplest execution of this principle one is extended the type member by a nose, which briefly interrupts with each revolution a fork light barrier. In accurately in each case predetermined time intervals after the interruption type member stands for type members in notice position. The sequence of the types on the print wheel is stored in digital electronics. , The electromagnetically operated stop pin headed for by digital electronics accordingly time correct strikes so fast on a type member and returns also comparably fast to its starting position that the print wheel does not need to continue and the casting takes place nevertheless sufficiently accurately. Instead of an extended type member with fork light barrier also different sensors are possible for the production of a main bang per revolution. Around energy to save the "continuous runner" can be switched off in write tracing of digital electronics also time-steered.
With the second type of Typenraddruckwerken the print wheel is fastened directly on the axle of a stepping motor. The stepping motor turns the print wheel always on the shortest way, forward or backwards, to the next necessary type member. Since in this case the print wheel stands with each casting, the electromagnetically operated stop pin can be more simply arranged. The speed of this type of printing element was increased by the fact that frequently used types on the print wheel were platziert next to each other. Often also with this type of printing element a print wheel with an extended type member with fork light barrier or comparable is used. This detail is needed here however only for the zero position of the stepping motor axle uniquely after switching on of the equipment on.
