A technical periodical is an appearing traditionally periodic printed usually scientific magazine, which supplies rapid and current information about newer research results in contrast to a Monografie and so the current conditions in a field of activity documented. On the other hand public magazines turn to a broad reader circle.

Beside extensive essays to individual topics there are small contributions, which are called in spirit-scientific magazines traditionally Miszellen. Further columns are research reports, reviews (over new Monographien) and/or collecting discussions. In some magazines technical discussions in own diskursiven sections "“controversy"” are discussed.

In some fields of activity contents of technical periodicals are opened through for one or more classes provided register.

Publishers and editors of good technical periodicals are usually also specialists in the appropriate area. Scientific technical periodicals avail themselves increasingly the Peer Reviews, in order to guarantee the quality of the contributions.

The international scientific technical periodicals with the highest Impact Factor are Nature and Science. In the German-speaking countries Spektrum der Wissenschaft (see Scientific American) is popular-scientifically aligned and stands thus between technical periodical and public magazine.

History
