Upper boat man designates a soldier in the secondarylowest sergeant rank in Germany with the German Federal Armed Forces within the German navy. In the other armed services this rank is called technical sergeant. Belonging one of the group of careers of the officers do not go through this rank usually.

Soldiers in this rank can give crews and NCOs without Portepee of instructions within the borders set by the superior regulation (VorgV).
