The Obergefreite is a rank, which designates different function stages in different armies.

History in Germany

The rank was at present the old army (to 1918/19) only intended for the technical special troop foot artillery. In the realm resistance and armed forces it gave then for the first time the general rank to "“upper private first classes"” in the grade category of the crews.

Germany

The rank upper private first class will a soldier of the German Federal Armed Forces generally after six month's service with the German Federal Armed Forces transferred ("§ 9,2 soldier career regulation (SLV), if it with the rank soldier were adjusted. Most basic military service conscripts will dismiss with this rank (when OGefr d.R.).

• Female soldiers with this rank lead the additive (w). The official address reads Mrs. Obergefreiter.
• The rank upper private first class can be jumped over, if the soldier with a higher rank were adjusted or other conditions to be present that he directly from the Gefreitem to a higher service wheel (main private first classes, in addition, junior sergeant or sergeants are possible mostly) be carried can.

Switzerland

In Swiss army there are the Obergefreiten (Abk.: Obgfr) after long discussions since 1 January 2004. He/they is a specialist, who or the function of a group leader deputy takes tasks with higher responsibility. If the Obergefreite has a guide function ranks it among the cadre, otherwise it is a degree of the crew.

The rank insignia shows 3 diagonal strokes, what can lead in international employments to a mistake with the Hauptgefreiten of the German German Federal Armed Forces.
