Valerius Cordus (* 18 February 1515 in Kassel; "† 25 November 1544 in Rome) was a German Botaniker, physician, a Pharmakologe and a natural scientist

The son of the Euricius Cordus acquired the Baccalaureus 1531 at the University of Marburg and studied thereafter from 1539 to 1534 (among other things with Philipp Melanchthon) at the University of Wittenberg medicine and Botanik and taught there afterwards as a professor.

It accomplished noteworthy lokalfloristische studies in central and South Germany and described numerous new, partial rare plant types. He was an excellent observer and among other things the reproduction of the ferns had already clearly recognized. Over the line fern Asplenium trichomanes it writes: "“It produced neither bloom nor seed, reproduces itself however nevertheless, by the lower surface of the sheets adhering powder, like all other kinds of fern also.

On suggestion of his uncle, the pharmacist Johannes Ralla he wrote the first legally prescribed Pharmakopoe north the alps under the title "“Dispensatorium pharmacorum omnium, quae in usu potissimum sunt"” (Nuremberg 1535). In a further work it describes the distillation of herbs and acids: "“Annotationes in Pedacei Dioscorides de Materia Medica more liber quinque. Liber de artificiosis extractionibus. Liber II de destillatione oleorum"” (Nuremberg 1540).

A further work, "“Stirpium descriptionis more liber quintus (Strasbourg 1561)"” remained because of its early death a Torso and by Conrad Gesner posthum was brought out.

Cordus is attributed the first production of ethyl ether, other wise its uncle Johannes Ralla this achievement too.

1534 it undertook a study trip to Italy and died there at the consequences of an accident.
