General information

The gulf I is the legitimate successor VOLKSWAGEN beetle. Under dramatic conditions developed, he saved the fastened Volkswagen company in all-last minute. VOLKSWAGEN - boss Heinrich northhope had to for a long time for the beetle and angestaubte tail engine - concept set. Its successor Kurt Lotz struck the way to a new concept with engine and front wheel drive. Of beetles developed by Porsche - successor with central engine (the engine was under the rear seat) was stopped in last minute. In the year 1974 the introduced gulf possessed against it numerous established AUDI - components. The designer Giorgio Giugiaro gave then I its salient appearance to the gulf, with which he began to write one to today continuous success history, which help the Volkswagenwerk again to an economic upswing from the low of the beetle mono culture.

Model history

  • 1969: First prototype EA-276
  • 1974: The new gulf presented with initially two engines (1,1 50 HP and 1,5 with 70 HP)
  • 1976: GTI with 81 KW (110 HP) and as soon as gulf Diesel with 37 KW (50 HP); in series with inertia reel belts in front and head restraints
  • 1979: Gulf Cabriolet (until 1993 in 388.522 units; usually-sold Cabriolet of the world), new kind of motorizing 1,3L and 60 HP. Production exclusive with Karmann in
  • 1980: the German Federal Armed Forces use the gulf as passenger car easily.
  • 1981: new equipment variants: C and CL, GTI now also as
  • 1982: Gulf GTD, commencement of production gulf of the I as VOLKSWAGEN Citi gulf in South Africa
  • 1983: VOLKSWAGEN Caddy, Pick UP version gulf
  • 1983: Pirelli GTI, special models LX and GX
  • 1983: End of production, except in South Africa.
  • 1993: End of the production gulf of the Cabrio
  • 2005: In South Africa further a modified gulf I is manufactured as VOLKSWAGEN Citi gulf.

Interesting: First the first gulf I with that 50 HP engine was only equipped, with drum brakes at the front axle! Also halogen headlight, tail wiper, heatable back window, brake booster belonged not to the standard equipment of the "“basic version"”.

GTI variants gulf of the I

  • Gulf GTI: 1,6l 8V 81 KW (110 HP without catalyst engine identification letter EEC)
  • Gulf GTI: 1,8l 8V 82 KW (112 HP without catalyst MKB DX)
  • Gulf GTI 16S: 1,6l 16V 100 KW (without catalyst, MKB EEC, limited, engine of Oettinger works on, selling only in France)

The idea to the gulf GTI was originally the suggestion to create a low-priced vehicle for spreading haven. The idea was suggested under that 18.3.1973, thus still before the official introduction on the market gulf, by the coworker of the test department Dipl. - engineer Alfons lion mountain company intern within "“the technical development"”. In the suggestion the model was called simply "“sport gulf"”.

This suggestion was further-carried taken up by the director/conductor of the passenger car development, Hermann Hablitzel, and. After the conception of the idea with Professor Ernst Fiala, the Volkswagen executive committee for research and technology, H.Hablitzel has suggestion green light despite the economic restrictions at that time of the pursuit given under the condition that the normal tasks of development of engineers engaged with the "“sport gulf"” were not impaired.

Thus then gradually on the basis prototypes and pilot lot cars any longer necessary some test samples sport gulf developed. These pointed different equipments out concerning engine, chassis, brakes, tires.

As motorizing a study of the director/conductor at that time of the engine attempt, Dipl. was used - engineer Karl Menzel, which had drawn 827 very sumptuous 100 HP from the 1,5l-Motor at that time on basis of the AUDI engine.

From the Teilefundus could be used there when desired the ventilated disc brake available in the "“AUDI 80 GT"”.

Wheels, tire, feathers/springs, absorbers in different combinations were developed and tested in the passenger car attempt.

Gulf Diesel

The diesel engine was derived from a well-known petrol short block assembly (M827) from AUDI, with which both the Diesel-typical components of one - in the comparison to the petrol engine - must withstand higher load (crankshaft, piston rod, piston, gudgeon pin, cylinder head, toothed belt, and the cooling by reinforcement were usually modified. Furthermore the cylinder head was provided with new centrifugal chambers. In the place of the distributor not necessary with the Diesel a vaccum pump for the brake booster could be platziert. The distributor-type injection pump (VESP) is operated over the existing synchronous belt drive of the cam shaft. Thus the diesel engine was not larger than a comparable petrol engine with same capacity; up to the conception of the diesel engine for the gulf diesel engines more were conceived toward heavy mechanical engineering.

The diesel engine had first a capacity of 1,5 litres with an output of 37 KW (50 HP), then 1.6 litres with 40 KW (54 HP). The operating attitude (noises, vibrations) in particular the two first diesel engine generations could not satisfy however far partly yet. The turbochargers of the first 70-PS-Dieselmotors then noticeably more noise comfort brought over the absorption in the Auspufftrakt.

Gulf GTD

Starting from 1982 the Diesel counterpart to the gulf I GTI was presented, the gulf GTD with 51 KW (70 HP) in the "“GTI Look"” and with tauter chassis. The evolution efficient and sporty gulf Diesel was started by the GTD.

For the increase in output of the 40-kW-Saugdiesel with 1,6 litres capacity the GTD was equipped with a turbocharger. Because of the higher thermal load of the piston heads these were obligation-cooled from downside by means of oil jet nozzles and the engine had to be equipped therefore with an oil/water radiator above the oil filter element.

1989 were this engine with a Oxi Kat available, additionally the injection pump of the suction diesel engines were then for the first time blocked. These measures reduced the achievement to 44 KW (60 HP). Likewise 1989/1990 one could for the first time order the turbo-Diesel without Oxi Kat with 51 KW with an intercooler, whereby the achievement on 59 KW (80 HP) was increased.
