General information

Gulf II Country

And until December 1991 gulf II Country produced 1990 imported an equipment variant gulf of the CL is syncro with four doors. The quantity production began in April 1990 in Graz, Austria with Steyr Daimler Puch (today Magna Steyr). For this a completely pre-mounted gulf CL was supplied in each case syncro with a 98-PS-Motor to Austria and reequipped there to the gulf II Country. Starting from July 1990 the second variant, the gulf II Country Allround was added. This variant had on functionality and less on comfort cut equipment (e.g. Imitation leather inside, standard rims in car color). Available this variant was "“forest green"” only in the color. By this variant only 160 vehicles (source were built: Old timer magazine, edition April 1993).

Starting from at the beginning of on the part of VOLKSWAGEN still another third equipment variant was then brought to 1991 on the market - the chrome edition. Their equipment with creme genuine leather equipment, electrical Faltschiebedach and chromium-plated attachments caused an enormous price thrust - this luxury variant cost at that time 52,200 DM and was only in black available. Were built by this special edition only 558 pieces.

There were also still some special versions and special changes like e.g. the gulf II Country GTI with 107 HP, for which in an edition by 50 pieces exclusively for Volkswagen coworkers one built, or special changes on other petrol engines and diesel engines.

The marketing leader at that time Berthold went out in the year 1989, one year before product introduction, with annually 5,000 units which can be delivered in completely Europe. Thus approximately 15,000 vehicles should be sold - were reached with accurately 7,735 units only approx. half from May 1990 up to the Produktionseinstellung of the Golf-2-Reihe.

The gulf II Country must be seen nevertheless as outriders of the today's SUV trend (SUV stands for sport utility Vehicle). Already in the year 1989 the jeep magazine off Road judged that this car inserts itself "“accurately into the gap, which opens itself if one continues to move away jeeps after conventional interpretation and road-bound all wheel passenger vehicles somewhat."” (Source: Off Road, edition September 1989, P. 21). If one regards the SUV wave rolling inexorably since center of the 1990er years, then it may be maintained only conditionally that the gulf II Country was a trendsetter, because AMC brought already in the year 1980 with the AMC Eagle a vehicle on the market, which resembled strong the concept gulf of the II Country. This vehicle was available apart from sedan and combination also as and Shooting Brake. Toyota copied only short time later with the RAV 4 this concept in similar form and achieved thereby on the Softroader market an enormous success, which continues until today.
