Early already with drafts for the Scirocco of the 80's-years one began. Two basic demands were to be kept: flowmore favorable body as well as more place for passengers and luggage. Also Giugiaro made a further draft, but with VOLKSWAGEN one decided then in the summer 1977 for the draft the VOLKSWAGEN in-house styling department.
It concerned a new shaping with horizontal pulled through belt line and lowered air resistance value despite roomier body. The Scirocco II was built (meanwhile millionfold) for the proven and constantly further developed mechanics, with the same road performances, with the underbody, the handling and the consumption of the predecessor.
This step should disburse itself. Although the price had to be raised around scarcely 10%, the Scirocco II became immediately a sales racer. Were over 20% of customers womanlike - at that time an above average value. Karmann could not produce at all so fast, as the customers ordered the
The Scirocco II of April 1981 was produced until September 1992.
1976 were already begun with pre-working to the Scirocco I successors. Due to the wind tunnel studies the Scirocco II kept more softly flowing lines additional in place of the edges and sharp outlines of the Scirocco I, a more strongly stressed wedge form with very front flat held and highly set tail conclusion as well as a spoiler (for increased drift and clean back windows). The Scirocco II was also one of the first cars, with which without a conventional rainwater gutter did became.
With cw = 0,38 (cw = 0,42 for the Scirocco I) the Scirocco II thereby had received a substantially lowered air resistance factor, for 1981 an average achievement in the automotive manufacture. The Scirocco II achieved so a new maximum speed of up to 190 km/h.
The complete chassis, and concomitantly the wheel base, by the Scirocco I were taken over. The Scirocco II was however nevertheless roomier in the interior: more place for elbows (by curvature of the body sides and recessing the internal linings), more head liberty, particularly in the back, and more baggage compartment (owing to 16,5 cm more car length). With the well-known engines (1,3L/60 HP, 1,5L/70 HP, 1,6L/85 HP and 1,6L a splash with 110 HP) it arrived then in the spring 1981 at the market.
After developments of a 16-Ventil-Motors at the company independent of VOLKSWAGEN and Karmann also VOLKSWAGEN had to pull tight Oettinger, who came in the autumn 1981 on the market. Starting from August 1982 the capacity of the a splash was increased to 1800 cm and the engine program was profoundly technically revised (long stroke engines). The Wartungsintervalle were tightened extended (15,000 km or annually), and the equipment and engine pallet (1,3L is omitted, 1,6L/70 HP, 1,6L/85 HP and 1,8L a splash with 112 HP)
To the Frankfurt IAA 1983 VOLKSWAGEN showed then its own 16-Ventiler prototypes (following Oettinger had more or less developed), which then however only in August 1985 be delivered could, with 129 HP also, and with 139 HP without catalyst. In addition the chassis was thoroughly revised at the same time and adapted to the new Leistungsniveau (, improved strengthened driving joint waves brakes, feathers/springs, absorbers and stabilizers). The still inexpensive 16V-Sciroccos ran over 200 km/h; the fastest (139 HP) accelerated in 8,1 seconds of 0 to 100 km/h, and reached a maximum speed of 210 km/h. (In Switzerland only the 129 HP engine was available.)
From 1982 to 1987 different special models appeared like the GTS (1982), the White Cat (1985), the Tropic (spring 1986) or the Scala (autumn 1986), partially with round around spoiler corroding and much additional equipment.
1988 took place a model clearing and a 1989, with the appearance of the Corrado, the Scirocco pallet were drastically tightened (only 1 engine: 1.8L/95 HP with Kat.), but at the same time the special model Scala again again presented. 1990 were taken up again the 16V to the program - because of the gap between the Scirocco with 95 HP and the Corrado with 160 HP - with positive effects on the sales figures.
Up to the production end in September 1992 then still the Scirocco GT II (not for Switzerland) and the Scirocco Scala remains in the offer.
Also the Scirocco II was based on the gulf I.

The Scirocco WhiteCat was a special model, which was offered only with white lacquer finish. Numerous white bars on the tail lamps obtained the optical impression, it are white. In the interior one found white sport seats.
The Scirocco Tropic was a special model and in two tropical color variations was offered, in Metallic and in Kiwibraun Metallic.
With the fuel injection systems K stands for continuous injection, the additive A for exhausthard, E for electronic.
Major item: VOLKSWAGEN Corrado
Since 88 new model, somewhat more largely, more modern. It has a trace more support from the feature again to the Scirocco I body Design. The technical underbody of the chassis including understructure decreases/goes back this time on gulf 2 roots.
The car from 1988 to 1995 of altogether 97 ' 521 vehicles was built.
Seen of the conception as Sportcoupe ago, the Corrado would actually be 3. Edition VOLKSWAGEN of the Scirocco been. It was settled however in a clearly higher price segment, and used among other things completely new engine technology (beside 16V the G60-Lader and the VR6-Zylinder). It was probably therefore brought by VOLKSWAGEN under a new name on the market.
After the rumors on the gulf V-platform is to come which are based Scirocco 2008 on the market. Engines can be selected by 140-280PS for the series start. Later an weight-optimized 6-Zylinder should be available variant with up to 300PS. One switches by means of 6-Gang-Getriebe or direct transmission
