William Ebstein (* 27 November 1836 in Jauer (Schlesien); "† 22 December 1912 in Goettingen) was a German physician and scientist.

Life

Ebstein came of to a largecivil GermanJewish family from Niederschlesien. It studied Breslau and Berlin medicine at the universities. To its teachers belonged Friedrich Theodor of Frerichs in Breslau as well as Rudolf Virchow and Moritz Heinrich Rome mountain in Berlin.1859 he in Berlin were attained a doctorate and worked since 1861 at the all holy hospital in Breslau. 1869 it habilitierte and kept to 1874 a call on a tidy Professur for internal medicine to Goettingen (as successors of Karl Ewald hate (1810-1902)). With large energy and commitment he dedicated himself to the teachings and research as well as the development of the hospital there. In its term of office the new medical hospital was established to the Humboldtallee. 1906 it was emeritiert. Its main point of research were the metabolic diseases. During its lifetimes it was considered as world-wide as one of the most important specialists in this area.

William Ebstein is not to confound with the English Virologen Anthony Michael Epstein (*1921), the Mitentdecker of the Epstein Barr virus.

A set of medical syndromes or anomalies is designated after it:

  • Ebstein anomaly (rare deformation of the Trikuspidalklappe)
  • Pel Ebstein fever (characteristic fever process occasionally with patients with malignant lymphomas, e.g. Hodgkin's disease arises)
  • Ebstein illness (hyaline degeneration of the Nierentubuli with diabetes mellitus, a form of the diabetischen Nephropathie)
  • Armanni Ebstein Nephropathie (special form of the late syndrome of the diabetischen Nephropathie)
