A work statement (or requirement specification) describes the direct requirements, expectations and desires to a planned product, formulates in natural speech. That can be for example a software program, in addition, a car, a coffee machine, a locomotive or equipment.

In accordance with DIN 69905 the work statement describes the whole of the demands on the supplies and achievements of a contractor, specified by the client, within an order. The work statement describes usually thus, what and for which something is to be made.

Product requirement specifications however describe, how and with which something is to be realized. According to DIN 69905 product requirement specifications contain the realization defaults compiled by the contractor due to the conversion of the work statement given by the client.

Depending upon operational area and industry work statements can differ in structure and contents strongly. Also in practice the terms work statement, product requirement specifications and specification will be defined often not clearly against each other or used synonymously. The unclear use of the terms work statement and product requirement specifications are frequently a cause for misunderstandings.
